How to … Select a Domain Name

Introduction

A critical step of building an online business is to choose and register an appropriate and catchy domain name.

A domain name helps define the profile of your business.  Many online businesses are known by their domain name.

Therefore, finding the perfect domain name for your online business is very important.

The perfect domain;

  • should tell the visitor something about your business,
  • is easy for visitors to remember,
  • is short enough to quickly and easily type into a browser, and,
  • is distinct enough to help you create an online identity for your store.

You may register a domain for your business simply because you like it.

Things to keep in mind when choosing a domain name

Length

In general, the shorter the domain name, the more likely your customer is to remember it, and spell it correctly when they want to visit your website.

Keywords

A domain name built on catchy, desired, and, relevant keywords will help search engines rank your site higher.  Not all search engines refer to keywords within a domain name, but several do – and you want every advantage you can get.

Name Recognition

Make sure that the most catchy portion of your business name is part of your domain name, so that your customers will easily recognize it as your website (e.g., if your business is “Fred’s Fine Gifts, Curios, and More,” consider using www.fredsfinegifts.com, as your existing customers will recognize that name).

Also, when choosing your domain name, make sure that you do not infringe on another company’s trademark (i.e., do not use Microsoft or Coca-Cola or Amazon.com as part of your domain or business name).

Definition:  Top-Level Domain

A top-level domain (TLD) is the last part of an Internet domain name; that is, the letters which follow the final dot of any domain name. For example, in the domain name emerchantclub.com, the top-level domain is com.

The .com TLD is the most frequently used extension on the Internet.  As such, visitors tend to expect to see a .com at the end of domain names.  This also means that .com names are more difficult to find than less popular extensions – such as .net or .org.
